ガス焼き糸（ガス焼きコットン）などと呼ばれている糸があります。短繊維は微細な毛羽が繊維の表面に存在します。ガスの火炎上を高速度で通過させ、表面の毛羽を焼いて光沢と丸みを出す加工を、ガス焼きと言います。この工程を経た糸をガス焼き糸、またはガス糸と呼んでいます。言葉にすると簡単ですが、その工程は、卓越した技術と想像をこえる繊細さが求められます。想像できると思いますが、コットンはすぐに燃えてしまいますから。現在この装置を保有している紡績工場は数少なく、貴重でありかつ高価な加工であるといえます。今まで、ガス糸を使って吊り編み機で天竺を編んだことはありませんでした。昨年のことですが、森下メリヤス工場という、第三の吊り編み工場が出現しました。今日は詳しい説明を差し控えますが、とあるところから吊り編み機を10数台入手して、新たな挑戦を始めるとのことでした。ループウィラーも何か一緒にできないかと思い、カネキチ工業さんでも、和田メリヤスさんでもできない吊り編み生地を作り上げられたらと思い、今後いろいろと挑戦していけたらと思っています。まずはLWロイヤルジャージと命名した、このガス糸を使って吊り編み機で編み上げた、ハイエンド吊り天竺の試編みをしてみました。これから丸和さんでサンプルを製作してテストに入りたいと思っています。おそらく日本のTOPレンジの吊り天竺ではないかなと思います。今までのループウィラーにはない風合いの生地に仕上がっていると思います。夏には間に合わないかもしれませんが、なるべく早く店頭にお目見えできるようにしたいと思っていますので、お楽しみにしていただけましたら嬉しく思います。@鈴木さとし
There’s a type of yarn that is called gassed yarn or gassed cotton. Short fibers have a slight fluff or nap on their surface. The treatment process by which we pass through a gas flame at high speed, which burns the nap off the surface, therefore bringing out the glossiness and roundness of the yarn is a process that is referred to as gas scorching. Yarn that is produced via this process is referred to as either ‘gas-scorched’, or merely ‘gassed yarn’. It is simple enough to explain, but the process itself requires superior skill and unimaginable subtlety. I’m sure you can imagine how quickly cotton burns. These days, the factories that possess this type of equipment are few in number, so it’s fair to say that this is a valuable, as well as an expensive process. Up until now, we had never knitted a T-shirt fabric on a loop wheel machine using gassed yarn. Last year a third loop wheel factory called ‘Morishita Knitted Goods’ made an appearance. Without going into too much detail, they have acquired a number of loop wheel machines from somewhere and are starting business afresh. I’m hoping that Morishita Co. and Loopwheeler will be able to work together on something and that they will be able to produce for us some fabrics that neither Kanekichi nor Wada are able to produce. First up, we did a trial knit for a high-end T-shirt material using gassed yarn. We named the fabric ‘LW Royal Jersey’. Hereafter, I’m hoping to get a sample produced at Maruwa. I dare say that it will be the most TOP range T-shirt fabric in Japan. I believe that we’ve produced a fabric with a texture that has never been seen up until now in the Loopwheeler lineup. It might not be ready in time for the summer, but I’m hoping to get it ready for debut in store as soon as possible, so I hope you’re all excited. @ Satoshi Suzuki / WEG
